The Unst Partnership was set up in 2000 to help improve community life and facilities on the island. After the closure of Unst Airport in 1995 and the final closure of the RAF Saxavord Radar base in 2005, the population dropped from 1200 to 600. Since then UP has been involved in supporting and encouraging new developments on the island.

Over the years, UP has helped to support various projects to try and help sustain and enhance life on Unst, including now running a second-hand/recycling shop and a community skip scheme. We write a weekly column about the North Isles for the local newspaper, the “Shetland Times”; produce a Tourist map of Unst each year; arrange a free weekly prescription delivery service sponsored by the Sandison Trust; and act as a point of contact for anyone thinking of coming here on holiday, moving to Unst or setting up a business here.

We have three websites: our own www.unstpartnership.com site, with more information about our work; the “Visit Unst” www.visit-unst.com website with tourist information; and the “Walkers are Welcome” Unst site UNST WALKERS ARE WELCOME - Home as part of the UK “Walkers are Welcome” network.

Currently we look after the Viking Longhouse and Galley under licence from Shetland Amenity Trust, with the aim of running it for the community from April 2027.
